This is a story about how a vegan diet helped put lupus in remission for a medical doctor. It is an extreme case with a great response that I don’t expect would happen for everyone. However, it’s worth exploring as it shows the power of diet in improving your health. Especially, your kidney health and in cases of kidney disease.
What is Lupus?
Lupus is short for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body, including the kidneys. Chronic means that the symptoms and signs tend to last from weeks to years.
Autoimmune means your immune system can’t tell the difference between healthy cells and foreign invaders. As a result, it creates immune cells that attack and damage healthy tissue. This causes pain, inflammation and cell damage in various parts of the body.
Brooke Goldner M.D. was 16 when she was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure due to lupus. She was initially told by doctors she had six months to live, Dr. Goldner did intense chemotherapy, to suppress her immune system, and remarkably she beat the odds by staying alive. After her treatment she was able to get of her medications, but problems still persisted.
She decided to become a doctor and entered medical school in her twenties. Dr. Goldner developed another painful malady, antiphospholipid syndrome which “antiphospholipid antibodies” (anticardiolipin antibodies and lupus anticoagulant) causes blood clots and is another auto-immune disease with traits of lupus.
This condition gave her blurred vision and she suffered a stroke. She dealt with these new problems by injecting her stomach with powerful blood thinners every day. She was also told that she would never be able to have children which further devastated her.
Dr. Goldner became hopeless, but began dating a fitness trainer who supported her to stop consuming eggs and cheese and become a full-fledged vegetarian.
She stopped animal products and in turn opted for a high-raw diet rich in fresh vegetables. About four months later she was pleased to no longer suffer from migraines, joint pain, fatigue, and more surprisingly, her lupus and blood clot-inducing antibodies went into remission. Disappearing completely!
She monitored her lab work and after two years, and perfect labs, she stopped the blood thinning medication. She also, became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Now, Dr. Golder has devoted her life to disease prevention and treating people with vegetables and plant-based diets.
