Defendants involved in the hundreds of lawsuits levied against manufacturers of the drug, Nexium have filed a ‘Master Answer’ in response to the ‘Master Complaint’ plaintiffs lodged against them earlier in the year. The ‘Master Answer’ comes as a response to the allegations that the manufacturers’ proton pump inhibitors were directly responsible for consumers’ kidney-related health problems.
There are approximately 856 proton pump inhibitor lawsuits currently pending in the U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, where the assorted claims have all been centralized to be seen before a single judge.
The Master Complaint lodged by the plaintiffs cited breach of warranty, failure to warn and negligence among others. The Master Answer denies any and all allegations.
Prescription proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium are used by upwards of 15 million Americans annually for digestive problems including acid reflux and GERD. Though studies have suggested that they can improve these symptoms, subsequent kidney problems are a hefty price to pay merely to keep acid reflux at bay.
Differing numbers suggest between 25-70% of prescriptions written for PPI’s are unnecessary. This, coupled with long-term use, have been linked to kidney damage in multiple studies.
Here Are Just A Few Statistics!
- According to a study in CMAJ Open, drugs like Nexium caused a triple the risk of acute interstitial nephritis and more than doubled the risk of sudden kidney injury.
- JAMA Internal Medicine published a study which claimed proton pump inhibitors increased kidney disease risk by 50%
- The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology reported long-term PPI users risked a 96% increase in the likelihood their kidneys will fail and a 28% higher incidence of developing kidney disease.
Plaintiffs in the case are demanding the manufacturers be held accountable for failure to list warnings on their drugs that could have very well likely averted numerous kidney-disease related deaths.
