New research confirms the danger of heavy alcohol consumption in patients with chronic kidney disease. According to the study put out by Mayo Clinic Proceedings, those who consume heavy amounts of alcohol are more likely to experience rapid progression of the condition.
Researchers found, patients were increasing their risk two fold by continuing heavy alcohol consumption. The study was done in South Korea with 1883 patients, the mean age being 54 years. Some studies have said moderate consumption of alcohol is more or less allowable for CKD patients provided they are not undergoing dialysis. Those on dialysis would need to exercise extreme caution with drinking alcohol factoring in normal fluid allowance, diet and the current medications they are taking along with any potential contraindications.
