Maximizing Kidney Transplant Lifespan

In this video, I’ll be going over the steps you can take to keep Kidney Transplant as long as possible:

Keeping a kidney transplant is a very personal and knowledgable topic for us at HealthyKidney Inc. Our very own Robert Galarowicz has his own kidney transplant that he has lived with for over 20 years. There are many things you can do to keep your kidney transplant for a long time. These revolve around living a healthy lifestyle that includes proper diet, exercise, social support, and more.

The first thing to take seriously is your diet, like eating foods that are low in sodium, and avoiding fried foods. Your diet still plays a key role post kidney transplant. It is essential to keep a healthy weight and exercise regularly. A healthy, balanced diet will help prevent high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess weight gain and promote overall wellness and health.

After a kidney transplant, you should aim to follow a diet low in salt and high in fiber. A balanced diet includes an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition to lean meats, reduced-fat dairy products, whole grains, and plenty of water. It is important to keep your new kidney hydrated, so drink plenty of water and limit drinks with caffeine, as well as limit alcohol and cut out smoking entirely.

Besides diet, exercise is also important in keeping a kidney transplant for as long as possible. Exercises good for kidney transplant include walking, jogging, and other aerobic exercises for as little as 20 minutes at a time. Talk to your doctor about what exercises you can do, and definitely get active. Exercise along with a balanced diet will help keep your weight in check and also benefit the kidneys. Thanks for watching, and to your best kidney health everyone.
