Coffee Protects Kidneys In People With Diabetic Kidney Disease
Today’s video we have some interesting information about having two cups of this beverage which i’ll get into a moment helps protect people with diabetic kidney disease. Coffee protects kidneys in people with diabetic kidney disease. It helps slow the loss of function over time and if you have diabetic kidney disease/ diabetic nephropathy it’s considered a progressive chronic kidney disease meaning that you lose kidney function over time. This piece of research which i’ll talk about in a moment talked about how coffee can help be nephroprotective, help protect from the loss of kidney function.
This was published at the end of April 2022 in the journal of diabetes “investigation: drinking coffee may help preserve kidney function in adults with type 2 diabetes” and the study author, doctor Yugi, said it was quoted as saying coffee is not necessarily a bad beverage for patients with diabetes and may have a nephroprotective effect. This is from japan. There were 3,000 people in the study, and at the end of the time they saw people that drank no coffee lost the most amount of kidney function. People that drank one cup did better, and people who drank two cups did the best meaning they lost the least amount of kidney function over time.
Now this does go along with a lot of what we’ve seen now in the last 10 to 15 years with research and coffee and kidney disease and how it is nephroprotective as long as you’re not getting it really sweetened with sugar added with lots of calories or maybe a cream or just other syrups in there and sweeteners. That’s where it’s not good. You want to stick to the basic coffee. We have some coffee you can use a little bit of another liquid such as regular milk to rice milk, oat milk, coconut milk to more kidney friendly milks to help dilute it but that’s where you have the health benefit not when it’s all sugar and sweetened and has all these other additives in it.
So it seems two cups is okay and you still want to make sure you drink your water per day. That has some protective effect so it’s something you may want to try in your diet. Make sure to speak to your doctor first if you’re going to be adding in the caffeine and your blood pressure because maybe it’s not a good idea for you but this is something that was found that’s beneficial. So if you’re having already two cups, try to clean it up have less sugar added, less creamers or calories overall. If you’re having one cup, maybe you can go to two if you’re having none make sure to speak to your doctor first, and then try it.
