Even children can get hit with an issue as ruthless and cruel like serious kidney problems. Scientists are now warning metabolic acidosis was linked to a higher risk of kidney issue progression in children diagnosed with glomerular disease. Children with bad kidney health have a higher risk for metabolic abnormalities, hospital admission, cardiovascular disease, cognitive and growth impairment.
Glomerular disease is caused by damage to the glormeruli of the kidney. The glormeruli are part of the nephrons, which are tiny fiber units in the kidney. Glomeruli strain the blood and let the waste and water pass through to make urine. They hold back the protein, in addition to the blood and allow that to circulate in your body.
Metabolic acidosis is a condition where the body produces too much acid. It is measured by low serum bicarbonate and is found in a high percentage of children with glomerular issue of the kidney.
In this study pediatric patients, from 6 to 16 years old, found low serum bicarbonate (under 22 mEq/l) was associated with a faster progression of kidney damage in children. The study also showed that alkali therapy use in pediatric kidney issue may be underutilized.
Metaboilic acidosis is a complication of kidney disease that can be improved with sodium bicarbonate supplementation. Here are some articles about sodium bicarbonate and kidney function we also encourage you to read:
