Is Coconut Oil Good for Chronic Kidney Disease?

One of the oils that have been known to help with chronic kidney disease as well as improve the renal function is coconut oil. It helps the people suffering from IgA nephropathy and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) because coconut oil slows down the process of formation of scar tissue in the kidneys.

For people suffering from chronic kidney disease along with diabetes, coconut oil is beneficial as it contains high amounts of triglycerides. The medium-chain triglycerides present in coconut oil can be used as energy without depending on the need of insulin. The fact that it can withstand high temperatures also makes it viable to be used as cooking oil.

Virgin coconut oil has high amounts of antioxidants that help with curbing inflammation in the body. It ensures the renal function doesn’t worsen, which is the case when using hydrogenated oils. However, it is to be noted here that oil of any kind contains saturated fat and should only be consumed in moderation. It is also because coconut oil has potassium that is known to be harmful to people suffering from chronic kidney disease.

In one of the studies published in 2010 in Pharmaceutical Biology, virgin coconut oil helped with inhibiting the rapid spread of chronic inflammatory response in the body. It was primarily because it regulated the levels of Alkaline Phosphatase. The root cause of many kidney disorders is the urinary tract infection caused primarily due to viruses or E.coli bacteria. Coconut oil is known to have antifungal and antimicrobial properties that help with fighting off these foreign viruses and bacteria. It keeps the growth of any infection in check successfully, and in one of the studies proved its ability to inhibit the growth of infection-causing bacteria known as Staphylococcus Aureus.

Also, in patients suffering from Pyelonephritis, coconut oil helped with balancing and regulating the Renal Urokinase activity, which is useful in preventing the development of kidney stones. Thus, it is safe to say that people with chronic kidney disease can consider including coconut oil in their diet in moderation.
