PKD & Caffeine: Dangerous or Good In A PKD Renal Diet

Coffee is an all-time favorite beverage all over the world and it’s the second most traded commodity in the world, first being crude oil. Even though Hawaii is the only American state that grows coffee, here are some facts you didn’t know about Beethoven’s ‘favorite’ drink.

Americans consume around 400 million cups of coffee per day, equivalent to 146 billion cups of coffee per year, making the United States the leading consumer of coffee in the world. Coffee represents 75% of all the caffeine consumed in the United States. The average coffee cup size is 9 ounces.

However, people dealing with kidney disease or more specifically polycystic kidney disease have many questions regarding caffeine and their renal diet.

What is Polycystic kidney disease?
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within your kidneys, causing your kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time. Cysts are noncancerous round sacs containing fluid. The cysts vary in size, and they can grow very large. Having many cysts or large cysts can damage your kidneys. Most people refer to autosomal kidney disease as the more common type.

PKD can also cause cysts to further develop in your liver and elsewhere in your body. The disease can cause serious complications, including high blood pressure and kidney failure.

There are lots of natural and conventional treatments for PKD especially in the last couple of years due to research. When it comes to caffeine, it was widely believed that it may not be safe for someone with PKD. But with more research that has come out in the last 5 to 10 years, it shows that it’s okay to consume coffee and caffeine may have protective benefits if consumed in small amounts. You’d still want to avoid high amounts of sugar and try not to add any milk.

Black coffee or herbal tea is recommended for individuals dealing with polycystic kidney disease. Caffeine doesn’t seem to pose any harm if you’re doing a cup or two a day. It can give a little bit of brain perk in addition.

Minimal amounts of milk is acceptable but one should try to drink it black.
