Supplements for Kidney Health: My Daily Routine
When people ask me about the supplements for kidney health that I personally take, I always start with an important disclaimer: this is my routine, not necessarily the routine that is right for you.
My journey with kidney disease began in my early twenties when I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. A few years later, I was on dialysis and eventually received a kidney transplant. The transplant was not expected to last very long, but here I am 18 years later with kidney function that has remained stable far beyond expectations.
I believe a combination of medical care, diet, lifestyle, and carefully selected supplements for kidney health has played a major role in helping me maintain my kidney function. While supplements are not a cure for kidney disease, they have been one of the few things I could actively control in my daily life.
Why My Kidney Support Supplements Change Over Time
One thing I always tell people is that supplement protocols are not permanent.
Blood work changes. Health goals change. Kidney function changes.
What I take today may not be what I take six months from now. After every blood test, I evaluate my results and determine whether I need to make adjustments.
Sometimes people also experience pill fatigue. Taking numerous supplements every day can become overwhelming, and simplifying a routine can sometimes be beneficial.
The protocol below is simply what I am currently using while waiting for my next round of laboratory testing.
Best Supplements for Kidney Health in My Daily Routine
My daily supplement routine focuses on supporting kidney health, cardiovascular health, antioxidant protection, gut health, and nutritional status.
Everything I take has a specific purpose.
High-Potency Multivitamin
I take a high-quality one-per-day multivitamin that contains elevated levels of B vitamins, zinc, and other important nutrients.
Many individuals with kidney disease may struggle to obtain optimal amounts of nutrients through food alone. A multivitamin helps provide nutritional insurance and fill potential gaps.
If the potency seems too high, some people may choose to split the dose.
CoQ10
I take 400 mg of CoQ10 daily.
Coenzyme Q10 plays an important role in cellular energy production and has been studied extensively for cardiovascular health and oxidative stress reduction.
Since oxidative stress is a major concern for people with kidney disease, CoQ10 remains one of my foundational supplements.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide is one of the highest-dose supplements in my protocol.
I currently take approximately 1,500 mg twice daily.
My primary interest in niacinamide involves phosphorus management, cholesterol support, and overall metabolic health. Maintaining healthy phosphorus levels is important because elevated phosphorus has been associated with faster kidney disease progression.
Kidney Support Nutrients I Personally Take
Several additional nutrients play an important role in my daily routine.
Cordyceps
Cordyceps is one of my favorite supplements for kidney health.
I typically take between 1,000 and 1,500 mg twice daily.
Cordyceps has been researched for energy production, immune support, antioxidant activity, and kidney health. It is one of the most frequently discussed medicinal mushrooms in kidney wellness circles.
Methylfolate
I take methylfolate in the active form known as 5-MTHF.
Methylfolate supports homocysteine metabolism and cardiovascular health, both of which are important considerations for individuals living with chronic kidney disease.
Curcumin
Curcumin is another supplement I use daily.
I generally take two to three capsules per day.
Curcumin, the active compound found in turmeric, has been studied extensively for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Because inflammation is often elevated in chronic kidney disease, curcumin remains a valuable addition to my routine.
Pycnogenol
I take 100 mg of pycnogenol each day.
Derived from French maritime pine bark, pycnogenol has been studied for circulation, cardiovascular health, and antioxidant support.
Kidney health and cardiovascular health are closely connected, making pycnogenol a supplement that fits well into my overall wellness strategy.
Supplements for Kidney Health and Gut Support
One of the most exciting areas of kidney research today involves the gut-kidney connection.
Probiotics
I take probiotics every day.
Depending on the product, I consume approximately 150 to 300 billion CFUs daily.
Healthy gut bacteria may help reduce the production of uremic toxins that accumulate when kidney function declines. Supporting the microbiome has become an increasingly important strategy for maintaining kidney health.
Kidney Restore
I also use Kidney Restore daily.
I only take one serving because many of the areas it targets are already well managed in my situation.
However, I appreciate the additional probiotic support and alkalinity support it provides.
My Daily Kidney Health Supplement Protocol
Certain supplements are necessary because of my transplant medications.
Magnesium Glycinate
Due to tacrolimus and other transplant medications, I experience magnesium wasting syndrome.
This means my body loses magnesium rapidly.
To compensate, I take magnesium glycinate daily. Magnesium glycinate is generally well absorbed and easier on the digestive system than many other forms of magnesium.
Anyone with kidney disease should discuss magnesium supplementation with their healthcare provider before using it.
Vitamin D3 and K2
I also take a vitamin D3 and K2 formula.
Vitamin D deficiency is common among people with kidney disease. Vitamin D plays an important role in immune function, bone health, and overall wellness.
Vitamin K2 complements vitamin D by helping support proper calcium metabolism.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids remain one of the most researched supplements available.
I typically take three to four capsules daily, although I occasionally use liquid fish oil instead.
Omega-3s have been studied for cardiovascular health, inflammation management, triglyceride support, and kidney health.
Final Thoughts on Supplements for Kidney Health
After living with kidney disease, dialysis, and a kidney transplant, I have learned that consistency matters more than perfection.
My goal is not necessarily dramatic improvement. My primary goal is maintaining kidney function for as long as possible.
If my laboratory values remain stable and I avoid losing kidney function, I consider that a victory.
The supplements for kidney health that I take today are part of a larger strategy that includes proper medical care, healthy nutrition, exercise, stress management, and ongoing monitoring.
While your supplement needs may differ from mine, staying informed and proactive can help you make better decisions about your kidney health journey.
Eighteen years after receiving a transplant that was never expected to last this long, I remain grateful for every day of kidney function I still have.
